Stories that Inspire- Mackenzie’s Story

Mackenzie was born with Usher Syndrome Type 2A, a condition that can affect both hearing and vision. Her parents, determined to ensure she grows up feeling supported and connected, were committed to finding ways to help her navigate the challenges ahead.
Despite Mackenzie being only a little over a year old at the time, her family wanted her to know she was never alone in her journey. They hoped she would grow up knowing that there’s a supportive community of others who share similar experiences. In search for that community, they discovered Walk4Hearing through another inspiring team, Ava’s Voice, which participates in the annual walk in New Jersey.
When they participated in their first walk, the New York City Walk4Hearing, they didn’t know exactly what to expect. They were blown away by the number of participants, the inspiring atmosphere and the joy they felt when they realized they were not alone on their journey supporting a young child with hearing loss. Their team, Mackenzie’s Roses, came together and beat their goal raising over $5,000 in 2024.

The walk gave us an opportunity to connect with others, to share our story and to help build a future where people with hearing loss are understood and celebrated.
