The Walk4Hearing is about sharing an experience, learning from each other, making memories, and taking the first step towards unity in our community. Here in Connecticut, we have an incredible rich and diverse community of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. We, the American School for the Deaf, are the oldest Deaf school in America. We are deeply committed to our population of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals and strive to provide full access to communication, both through American Sign Language and spoken/written English.
We walk to celebrate our community and to raise awareness. We walk so that our students know that they can achieve their dreams and that they are not alone. Hearing loss affects 1 in 7 individuals and over 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents who may not have an understanding of Deaf culture. We walk to show the world that we are, as said in our motto, "all ways able."
